Stop hostility, UJCC asks govt, rebels

THE Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) has asked the government and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels to work out modalities for cessation of hostilities as a means of building confidence and creating a conducive atmosphere for the peace talks.

THE Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) has asked the government and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels to work out modalities for cessation of hostilities as a means of building confidence and creating a conducive atmosphere for the peace talks.

This was contained in their resolution during a stakeholders meeting on the northern Uganda peace process at Lillian Tower Hotel in Lira on Friday.

Participants included the MPs, resident district commissioners, army representatives, LC5 chairpersons, district councillors, religious leaders and opinion leaders from Teso Acholi and Lango region.

The Rev. Canon Grace Kasio, the UJCC secretary appealed to the international community to give the Juba peace talks a chance. He expressed hope that the two warrying parties would sign a comprehensive peace agreement to end the war.

The meeting addressed the role of the stakeholders in dialogue and building trust and confidence between the government and the LRA.

It also dealt with the needs for cessation of hostilities and ceasefire, reconciliation and accountability of the post-conflict challenges.

Kaiso urged the government to create an enabling environment to facilitate the participation of various stakeholders in the peace process.

UJCC asked political parties, the media, academician and Ugandans in diaspora to support the peace process meditated by southern Sudan government.
