THE Government is exploring ways of increasing salaries of all professionals to avert brain drain, finance state minister, Fred Jachan Omach, has said.

Omach said the initiative is also aimed at pulling back Uganda’s most experienced and skillful labour from abroad, especially in Europe and the US.

He said the most hit sector was science and technology, yet it is more pertinent in influencing growth and development.
“Many students are still targeting jobs abroad upon graduation. At the end of the day, we end up educating journey men and ladies,” Omach said.

According to the World Bank, Africa loses about 70,000 professionals through brain drain annually.

He said Uganda loses millions of dollars through brain drain and it was choking the country’s economic growth and development.

Omach said this at a Leadership Advancement International partner outreach meeting at the Grand Imperial Hotel recently.
