MAKERERE University has honoured Prof. Timothy Wangusa for his outstanding work in literature and poetry.

Wangusa, a presidential adviser on literary affairs, has authored four poetry books namely, Salutations, Party of Dust, Anthem for Africa and Africa’s New Brood.

Speaking at the ceremony at the university main hall on Thursday, wangusa said, “cynics say poetry doesn’t sell anything. But it is the mother tongue of mankind where men, women and children express themselves.”

The function was organised by the faculty of arts and the department of literature.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. livingstone Luboobi urged scholars to strive for success, saying, “We shouldn’t gauge or evaluate people by the length of the papers they have written. It doesn’t mean that you have to write 500 pages to get a PhD.”

Wangusa’s shortest poem has three lines and 15 words.

“The challenge is for students and the university to strive for the same success,” Luboobi added.

Faculty dean Hannigton ssengendo and literature department head aloysius Kwitonda attended.
