By Vision Reporter The New Vision has appointed Els De Temmerman, a Belgium journalist, the Editor-in-Chief. Her appointment takes effect December 1.
She replaces David Sseppuuya who resigned last month for personal reasons.
Temmerman holds a Masters degree in Literature and has vast experience as a journalist having covered 40 African countries for major international newspapers. She is currently the coordinator of Rachele Rehabilitation Centre, Lira, which focuses on the rehabilitation and reintegration of formerly abducted children in northern Uganda.
She has authored five books including Aboke Girls, Abducted Children in Northern Uganda, which is translated into Spanish, Italian and French.
She has won many prestigious awards including Media Person of the Year (Belgium, 1994); Woman of the Year (Belgium, 1995); Prize of the Dutch Daily Press (the Netherlands, 1995); Guinness Power of Goodness Award (Uganda, 2004) and the Vocational Service Award for outstanding utilisation of vocational skill as a journalist to the benefit of the community in need (Rotary Club Kampala, Uganda, 2004-2005).
“The media market in Uganda is becoming increasingly competitive so we are happy to have recruited a top class international journalist to become editor-in-chief.
“We are very confident that under her leadership, The New Vision will not only continue to be the market leader but will even increase the lead,†the board chairman, Brigadier Nobel Mayombo, said yesterday.
Outgoing chief executive officer William Pike said, “Els is a professional journalist committed to freedom of the press.â€
Pike added, “She has agreed with the board that she will have complete editorial independence and I believe that on this basis, she will maintain New Vision’s proud tradition of being national, objective and a fearless newspaper.â€
Commenting on her appointment, award-winning Temmerman said, “I am honoured and grateful for the confidence placed in me as a Belgian. “I see my task as two-fold to build the capacity of Ugandan journalists. To build bridges between the Western world and Africa, and having lectured at the Chinese Feng Chia University to build bridges between Asia and Africa.
"Also having lived in several African countries, I have a huge network of contacts all over Africa. So I hope to build bridges between African countries.†Ends
