THE European Union (EU) is to spend Euro 8m (about sh18.6b) on supporting capacity building in civil society organisations over three years.

The Civil Society Capacity Building Programme deputy programme manager, Jackie Asiimwe mwesige, yesterday said they had disbursed grants to 47 civil society organisation.

“These organisations work in advocacy, empowerment and service delivery. They will receive grants totalling to sh7.5b over the next two years,” she said at at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel yesterday.

She said the programme represents the first large-scale civil society funding through the Government and reflects its attempt to diversify service delivery and provide space for the civil society.

The press conference was preceded by a media breakfast in which the relationship between the media and civil society was discussed.

The event was part of the launch of the Advocacy Week due next week, under the theme, “From the margins to the Mainstream”. Peace and reconciliation, workers’ rights and natural resources management in Uganda will be discussed.

Makerere University Mass Communication department head Dr. Peter Mwesige in a paper said in many countries media coverage of civil society is criticised as superficial, often limited to breaking news reports about one-off initiatives without in-depth discussion.
