NRMO gets plot for HQ

THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) has acquired a prime plot in Kampala city, where it plans to build its headquarters.

THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) has acquired a prime plot in Kampala city, where it plans to build its headquarters.
The Uganda Land Commission (ULC) approved the NRM’s application to acquire Plot 38 Hannington Road last Friday, the commission’s chairperson, Mayanja Nkangi, said.
“They (NRM) applied like anybody else and their application was approved,†Nkangi said yesterday. But he said he could not give details because he was out of office and he needed to check the file.
The plot of land is adjacent to the Crested Towers and overlooks Shimoni Demonstration primary school.
According to documents seen by the New Vision, the land was originally owned by
the East African Community. When the community collapsed in the 1970s, the land reverted to the Uganda Land Commission.
The NRM applied for a five-year lease that could be extended to 99 years, according to the documents.
The application was in the
name of the National Resistance Movement Organisation (NRMO) operating on Plot 10, Kyaddondo Road. It was reportedly signed by President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM chairperson.
Sources said the premium to be paid by the NRM will be determined after the land is re-surveyed. The application did not mention the value of the land.
The plot is currently being used as a car-washing bay. Sources said the meeting during which the application was considered and approved, was chaired by former MP Sazir Mayanja.
Mayanja Nkangi reportedly left the meeting as the application was about to be discussed. He reportedly said he had other pressing commitments.
When asked about his absence, Nkangi said he had urgent matters to attend to at the bank. Nkangi is the president of the Conservative Party (CP).
Other ULC members who attended the Friday meeting included former minister Fred Mukisa, Ruth Aliu, Obonyo Jabwor, Shem Bageine and S.B.K. Mubbala, the secretary to the commission.
The NRM, which was the first political party to be registered in 2003, is operating from Kyaddondo Road at Museveni’s former campaign headquarters during the presidential elections in 1996 and 2001.
Museveni has said before that he wants the Movement to build its headquarter house taller than that of UPC’s 13-storeyed Uganda House on Kampala Road.
There is already a committee in place mandated to raise funds for the Movement building.
