THE high court is to rule whether the British government is immune to court action arising from it’s involvement in the “lost counties” dispute between Bunyoro and Buganda Kindgom.

Justice Richard Oscar Okumu-Wengi yesterday said he needed to rule on the issue of immunity before proceeding with the main case.

Bunyoro Kingdom jointly sued the governments of Uganda and Britain, the Kabaka and 3,635 absentee landlords who own the disputed land.

Wengi said he foresaw legal problems on the immunity issue and needed to adjourn the case to research on it.

He said other foreign governments including the United States have been sued in Ugandan courts before.

Bunyoro is seeking to recover the land comprising of Bugangaizi and Buyaga counties from Buganda and compensation of sh500b for 100 years of economic deprivation and exploitation.

Bunyoro’s press secretary Henry Ford Mirima is behind the case.
