STEPHEN Kawuma reasserted Uganda’s supremacy in East African chess, by snatching the Kenyan title in Nairobi yesterday.
Victory at the Aga Khan sports club saw the 24-year-old former Ugandan champion joining greats like Emmanuel Kabuye, Bob Bibasa and Willy Zabasaija who have won Kenya’s top event. He won Ksh30,000(sh0.6m)
It is also Kawuma’s second victory on Kenyan soil, having won the Eldoret open title.
Hassan Mulambe took second position while the reigning Ugandan champion, Moses Kawuma finished a disappointing fifth.
Kawuma had tied on six points with Mulambe and Kenya’s best Ben Magana but Kawuma was declared winner by virtue of having met a higher ranked opponent in his elder brother, Moses in an earlier decisive match.
Mulambe was unhappy with the verdict saying he should have been crowned champion having not lost a game. He drew two matches unlike Kawuma and Magana who lost one a piece.
