UGANDAN sprinters will have their chances of qualifying for different international meets when they take part in the Africa Athletics Confederation permit meets in Nairobi.

IAAF rules stipulate that sprinters can only qualify for international competitions like the Commonwealth Games and World Athletics Championship through electronic timers, which are available at Moi Sports Complex, Kasarani.

“That is the only chance they get to use the electronic timing gadgets. They are very expensive to be used,” said UAF secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.

Ayikoru explained that the African body offers two air tickets to athletes, but the local body thought it befitting to utilise the tickets to transport a bigger number of athletes by opting to road transport.

Athletes will also get a chance to win cash prizes at a tune of $1250 (sh2.2m) to $100 (sh0.17m) at the meet.

The athletes set to make the trip are Justine Bayiga and Sarah Nambawa (200m), Raymond Diogo and Stephen Odwar (100m), Waisswa Lukungu (800m), Jet Barnabas Kimwogo (3000m Steeplechase), Patrick Kibwota (javelin), Dennis Jonyera (long jump) and Moses Kipsiro (3000m).

Meanwhile, over 176 athletes took part in the Bukwa 10km run held in Kapchorwa over the weekend.

Annet Chelangat (45:45.0) and Isaac Kiprop (35:45.5) won the women and men events respectively.
