WILLIAM Ntulume, 18, a Senior Six student of St. Balikuddembe SS, Mitala Maria, is seeking $13,000 (about sh24m) to undergo open-heart surgery and valve replacement, writes Vision Reporter.

Dr. Sulaiman Lubega, a medical officer at Uganda Heart Institute (UHI), said such an operation can be carried out at Madras Medical Mission Hospital in India.

Lubega said Ntulume was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease and aortic stenosis, a condition that prevents heart valves from operating normally.

“It’s a serious problem. We can’t handle it at the institute. We recommend him to Madras,” he said.

Ntulume’s mother, Justine Zalwango, appealed to companies and well-wishers to help her son raise the money.

Dr. John Omagino, a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon and the deputy director of UHI at Mulago Hospital, said the operation should be done as soon as possible.

He said the money could be banked on Account No. 1775930 at Barclays Bank Main Branch in Kampala in the names of Uganda Heart Foundation (William Ntulume) or call Zalwango on 077-847919.

He said the money would cover medical costs, transport and subsistence for the patient and a nurse in India.
