FORMER LRA commanders and fighters may join any political party of their choice and participate in politics if they want, the Gulu LC5 chairman has said.

Col. Walter Ochora said, “This is your country. You are free to join any political party but you should know how to join them. I advise you to first study the political mood before you can join either NRM, FDC, UPC or DP.”

Ochora was addressing the former combatants at Mwokka Guest House in Gulu recently.

He gave himself and the district RDC, Max Omeda, as examples, saying they were rebels before they were elected into public offices by the community.

He also advised the ex-rebels to form as many organisations as they can, to solicit funding from NGOs.

He, however, said some NGOs were only using the former rebels’ name to solicit funds from donors but doing nothing to help them.

Ochora said the district would ensure that the former rebels are catered for by sub-county budgets.

The former combatants were thrown into prolonged laughter when Ochora said he was the President of Uganda for three days when they overthrew the government of Dr. Milton Obote in 1985, before giving it to Tito Okello Lutwa.
