THE Government is working on a three-year master plan to turn Jinja town into a city, the minister of state for trade, Nathan Igeme Nabeta, has said, writes Charles Kakamwa.

Speaking at the 43rd Independence anniversary celebrations in Walukuba division on Sunday, Nabeta said under the master plan whose feasibility study is underway, Kimaka airstrip would be expanded to enable it handle large and increased number of aircraft.

He said other projects include the establishment of five-star hotels, a zoo, development of the source of the river Nile and a quick railway transport network to Kampala and other parts of the country.

Nabeta said the developments were geared at attracting more tourists and investments to Jinja to increase employment opportunities and restore the town’s glory.

“Though Jinja town is strategically located and has unique features like the source of the Nile, its tourism potential has not been exploited to the maximum. We have to increase it for more income,” said Nabeta, also urged residents to develop entrepreneurship skills.
