FOLLOWING the issuance of international arrest warrants against LRA rebel leaders, amnesty International (AI) has asked the government to revoke its “unlawful†Amnesty Law, which it said protects perpetrators of crimes against humanity, writes Jude Etyang.
The world forgiveness and reconciliation body instead recommends that Uganda begins comprehensive investigations and prosecutions against the LRA rebels.
Through the Amnesty Act 2000, over 15,000 rebels mostly from the LRA ranks, have been pardoned by the government and resettled in their communities.
“Uganda must revoke its unlawful national amnesty seeking to protect perpetrators of the worst possible crimes from justice and begin comprehensive national investigations and prosecutions as soon as possible,†AI said in a statement recently after the International Criminal Court issued the warrants of arrest.
