DP in poll squabble

The Democratic Party (DP) National Working Committee (NWC) has not received any petition against the election of Kampala mayor Ssebaana Kizito (below) as the city party chairperson.

The Democratic Party (DP) National Working Committee (NWC) has not received any petition against the election of Kampala mayor Ssebaana Kizito (below) as the city party chairperson.
Former Kampala mayor Al-hajji Nasser Sebaggala on Thursday said in a joint petition with Makindye East MP Michael Mabikke that the election of Ssebaana was irregular because it took place at a secret venue and time.
The election took place on the evening of Saturday November 12 in a side-room of the Cardinal Nsubuga Memorial Hall. By then there were still polls disputes in Makindye East and delegates loyal to Mabikke had not been elected. Mabikke said he had delivered the petition to the NWC.
“I am not aware of any such petition. And in any case it would not come to me directly but go to (national organising secretary) Damiano Lubega,†said NWC chairman Prof. Fredrick Ssempebwa on Monday.
Lubega on Friday said, “This is the first time I am hearing of such a thing.â€
The petition would jeopardise Ssebaana’s chances of competing for the party top-most position during the national delegates’ conference due on Saturday.
Sebaggala is one of the competitors for the post.
A source at the NWC said yesterday Sebaggala and Mabikke were simply using, through the media, a threat of petition in order to negotiate their way into influential party positions at the national delegates’ conference.
Meanwhile, a party dispute has broken out in Wakiso district following the election of Kyadondo South MP Issa Kikungwe as district chairman. The polls, presided over by national campaign strategies chairman Robert Kitariko, have been cancelled by Lubega.
Kikungwe says Lubega has no right to cancel results.
