A second fire in a month has gutted Kasensero landing site in Rakai district, destroying over 200 shops and property worth millions of shillings.

The fire comes after another destroyed over 150 stalls full of merchandise worth millions at the same site in Kyebe sub-county.

The district Police commander, Abraham Betongeza, said the fire was caused by a candle that was left burning in a wooden stall.

He said there was negligence by traders and fishermen at the landing site because they always kept fuel for their boat engines inside these stalls.

Betongeza asked district heads to devise means of controlling fire outbreaks, which have destroyed peoples’ property on several occasions.

He urged the traders to be more careful with their property to reduce the fire outbreaks.
