EIGHT travellers were killed by suspected Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in an ambush on Tuesday at Ogowie parish between Aloi and Omoro in Lira district, the army has said.
The UPDF northern Uganda publicist, Lt. Chris Magezi, said about five LRA rebels eluded the UPDF soldiers and sneaked into Lira before staging the ambush.
“The ambush is a set back after a prolonged period of peace in Lira district. As the Christmas season gets closer, the rebels’ barbaric acts are aimed at showing the world that they still exist,” Magezi said.
The dead people could not be identified by press time, but reports said seven adults and an infant were killed.
The Third Division commander, Col. Gavas Mugyenyi, recently said they had deployed the UPDF on Lira-Amuria districts border and combed the area.
