THE Government will from next year gazette a tree planting day for schools in Uganda, the state minister for primary education has said.

Nyombi Thembo said, “By February next year, I should have a pronouncement on the date. Every school must be able to plant trees.”

He was on Saturday closing a three-day agricultural training workshop organised by Straight Talk Foundation (STF) for primary school teachers. The training, sponsored by DANIDA, took place at the District agricultural Training and information Centre in Tororo.

Thembo hailed STF for teaching young people life skills in the face of the AIDS scourge. He said this had helped to keep HIV/AIDS rates low among the youth.
STF director of communications Cathy Watson said STF started giving information on agriculture and tree planting to enable the youth grow up with skills that make them appreciate agriculture and the environment.

Thembo asked teachers not to leave the task of selling Universal Primary Education to Ugandans to the President.
