Uganda’s Maywood re-born

Not only does she share a name with Dutch musical duo of Alice May and Caren Wood, (Maywood) the early 80’s musical act, but also a striking resemblance in their voices, which one could be at pains to tell apart.

Uganda’s own Maywood Namuddu is fast shooting to stardom, with her Gospel hit, Lord I Thank you for Daddy, taken off her new 13-track Nebaza Yesu Album, a blend of both English and Luganda.

At celebrations to commemorate five years of Makerere Community Church’s Prime time the Pool last Saturday, the born-again student, a resident of Complex Hall, who started her musical career in S3 at Makerere College, not only emerged as crowd’s favourite but got a standing ovation from event host Pastor Martin Sempa plus a dozen gospel ministers and artists from Kentucky, USA.

Maywood, a first year Bachelor of Arts (Music, Swahili, Communication Skills) student says the album, which was produced by Kigame music production in Nairobi, is out to inspire and heal wounded hearts.

“It has always been my prayer to reach out to the distraught and the desperate either through ministry or music. I’m so blessed my music career has taken off and now I finally have an avenue through which to provide inspiration and healing,” says the 23-year old who goes to Eden Revival Church, Wandegeya for prayers.

About her major hit, Lord I thank you for Daddy, Namuddu, sadly relieves an incident that robbed her of her mother four years ago.

I am not confused is another prominent track on the album in which she defends her resolve to serve God. It also chastises people who brand the Born- again a confused lot. Other major tracks include, Ggwe Alumwa and Njagala Nkusiinze taken from Matthew 11:28 and Philippians 1:6.
She is set to launch her Nebaza Yesu album at Cine Afrique, on Sunday May 2.

Nicholas Nyombi, the Chief Executive of Ark Royale, an entertainment company focused on promoting and supporting gospel artists says the album is an instant hit.
