TWELVE people, including former Chief Justice George Japheth Masika, have picked nomination forms for the Mbale Municipality parliamentary seat.

TWELVE people, including former Chief Justice George Japheth Masika, have picked nomination forms for the Mbale Municipality parliamentary seat, reports Nathan Etengu.

Records at the Electoral commission district registrar’s office indicated that Masika, the former constituent assembly (CA) delegate for the municipality, who defeated the late James Wapakhabulo in the CA elections of 1994, picked the forms on Monday.

The nominations are to be held on Thursday and Friday after which the Electoral Commission will announce the campaign period and date for the bye-election to replace the former MP and 2nd deputy premier, Wapakhabulo (above), who passed away on March 27.

Other aspirants included the former state minister for Works and MP for Bubulo West constituency, Sylvester Wanjusi Wasieba and Masindi resident district commissioner Hassan Wasswa Galiwango.

Wasagali Sarah Kanabi, a warden at the Islamic University in Uganda, will be the first woman candidate to contest the Municipality election.
Angelina Wapakhabulo, the widow has not indicated any interest to replace her husband.

Other aspirants are Mbale LC5 vice-chairperson Swaliki Masokoyi Wasswa, a student at the Islamic University, Michael M. Wafana and a former lecturer at the same university, Abbas Wetaka. Reform Agenda’s Sam Wojega also picked the forms yesterday, reportedly on the advice of the party’s publicity secretary, Beti Kamya.

Peter Maswere of Naboa Road, Wilson Woniala Kasola, a teacher and Jimmy James Watuwa also picked forms.

London-based lawyer Peter Magomu Mashate, said in a telephone interview on Monday that he would also jet in before Friday for the nomination.
“I am definitely coming and will be in time for the nomination,” Mashate said.
