THE Rakai LC5 chairperson, Vincent Ssemakula, has appealed for more funds to promote eco-tourism at Musambwa Island bird sanctuary on Lake Victoria, reports Gerald Tenywa.
“We have to protect the birds and nature because they will attract tourists,’’ he said.
This was in his speech read by Kintu Kisekulo, a district official, at the hand-over of sanitation facilities at Musambwa recently.
The facilities, worth sh35m, were built with funding from the Environmental Conservation Trust, Nature Uganda and the district.
Musabwa, which comprises three small islands in Rakai district, is considered to be the only breeding ground for the Egretta garzetta (little Egret) in Uganda.
It also provides a temporary home for other globally-important migratory birds such as the long-tailed cormorant and the grey-headed gulls.
Ssemakula said eco-tourism would benefit the communities economically and encourage them to protect nature.
He said they had established a tourism association and were planning to build a road and a landing site.
