UGANDA has requisitioned for $100,000 (sh184m) from the International Olympic Committee for its 2004 programmes.
Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) president Major General Francis Nyangweso recently revealed that he applied for the money from IOC’s $300m development fund. The fund is aimed at aiding development projects in national associations.

UOC plans to spend the money on courses, Olympic preparations and establishment of a holiday camp where primary school children will be taught athletics, table tennis, basketball, tennis and volleyball basics at a city school to be identified soon.
The funds will also cater for a boost in women participation in sports under a project called Women in sport.

According to the veteran administrator, IOC expects strict accountability from UOC in case the funds are availed. “It is serious, we, for instance, have to ensure that almost everything is receipted,” said Nyangweso.
Nyangweso said courses would take about $20,000. The Olympic preparations include funding three boxers to a boxing tournament in Athens.

Uganda however did not send boxers to Greece that ended last week following a disagreement between Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation and the Ezra Boxing Board which last year offered to fully finance the pugilists Olympic preparations.

Also included in UOC’s application is coverage of athletes’ travel to international competitions aimed at boosting the number of Ugandan athletes in Athens.
Boniface Kiprop and Wilson Kipkemei are the only Uganda athletes who have hit the Olympics mark. Kiprop was, until Monday when Kipkemei qualified in the 10,000m in Holland, the only Ugandan who had met the Athens games qualifying requirements.

Five boxers also hit the mark in qualifiers in Morocco and Botswana in January and March respectively.
