FUFA have appointed former Cranes captain and current URA tactician Jackson Mayanja assistant to Cranes head coach Mohammed Abbas.
A FUFA emergency committee meeting also accepted Mike Mutebi’s resignation as assistant coach, and relieved the other assistants Frank ‘Video’ Anyau and Paul Ssali of their duties.
By naming Mayanja, the meeting chaired by FUFA president Denis Obua granted the wishes of coach Abbas that he needed an assistant who understood his working methods. Abbas coached Mayanja in his professional football stint at Egyptian club El Masry in the early nineties.
“You know Mutebi resigned and we had to give the coach his best option and that is Mayanja,” Obua said.
Obua explained that the sacking of Anyau and Ssali is a result of a recommendation by Abbas for a a smaller technical bench. FUFA confirmed Abbas’ contract has been finalised, and showed the press a copy of the signed three-year agreement.
Mayanja’s appointment, now pits the former and current national coaches in a crunch Kakungulu Cup semi-final decider today.

A depleted URA will miss the services of suspended defenders Shaka Okello, Hood Kawesa, and Robert Ssentogo. URA could have paid sh0.9m to the league committee to cancel their suspension but Mayanja said that this would cause complacency.
Though marksmen Hamisi Kitagenda and Deo Sserwadda face late fitness tests, Mayanja is still confident.
“We have many youngsters ready to make a name. We will defend in numbers but also make lethal attacks,” he said.
A goalless draw will benefit URA while a one-all draw will call for a penalty shootout. KCC could also go through by winning the game or getting a high score draw.
