THE country will regret dropping the condom use campaign in favour of abstinence and faithfulness, MPs have said.
Information state minister Dr. Nsaba Buturo on Thursday said the government had launched a drive to down-play condoms in favour of promoting abstinence and marital faithfulness.
Nyombi Thembo (Kasanda south) said the government should promote abstinence, faithfulness and condom use.
The MPs were attending a one-day national monitoring and evaluation framework for HIV/AIDS activities at Speke resort Munyonyo on Friday.
Deputy speaker Rebecca Kadaga said girls were still more vulnerable to temptations that may lead to contracting HIV because of economic hardships.
“Their needs have not been catered for by their parents. These girls need to be armed with knowledge and capacity to enable them to say no, when they are supposed to say no,†she said.
Kadaga hailed Parliament for being the only one with a standing committee on AIDS in Africa.
The Minister for the presidency, Kirunda Kivejinja, said new approaches and standard guides were needed to measure the progress made in the HIV/AIDS struggle.
He called for focus on monitoring and evaluation as a basis for resource mobilisation.
Apac woman MP Betty Among said the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate had gone up in northern Uganda due to the insurgency.
