By Samson Opus JOHN Opio produced a stirring display to finish top in the Club Five New Year UDA Open in Makerere on Sunday. The firm Me-Ups Club top seed upset David Tabaro of Chills & Meals 3-2. The towering Opio, who had entered twice in the singles, found himself the solo finalist. He beat Michael Nyeko in the other semi-final. Opio held his nerve as he fought from a set down in both semi-final legs to break though. “It was a tough victory. But it is a big challenge for me to maintain the standard,” said Opio with a sigh of relief. Posta’s Monica Katushabe won the women’s round robin event ahead of Me-Ups player Sarah Kitogo. In doubles, Opio and Nyeko overcame John Sendagala/Tabaro 2-1. The two-day event organised by Uganda Darts Association as a curtain raiser for the new season attracted 64 participants from various clubs. Meanwhile, the inter-regional championship that was scheduled for January 26 in Gulu has been put off.
