HEADS of teachers associations from East Africa have welcomed Uganda’s decision to start sex education in schools, reports Edris Kisambira.Thirty-five teachers meeting at the Ridar Hotel in Seeta, Mukono, said yesterday that the teacher education curriculum in the three countries should be harmonised so that teachers are trained on conveying sex education messages to pupils. The resolution was part of many others by the participants at the five-day conference sponsored by the World Bank, Education International, the International Labour Organisation, UNESCO and the Frederich Ebert Stiftung.David Muwanga, the president of the Uganda Teachers Association, said sex education in schools is timely. “The teacher education curriculum should be revised to include sex education. HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and cultural values should be addressed to effectively implement education for all,” Muwanga said.Health minister Jim Muhwezi said this week that President Yoweri Museveni had directed headteachers of primary and secondary schools to address their students on HIV/AIDS every two weeks. Muhwezi said the move was meant to combat HIV/AIDS. Ugandan teachers were urged to transform their associations into a union to harmonise their educational workers’ activities both at national and regional levels.
