The problems associated with manual registration at Makerere University will finally come to an end when the Academic Records Information System is completed mid this year, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe. This was recently revealed by the Director of Information Communication Technology, Dr.F.F. Tusubira. So far, all faculties at the university are connected to the direct internal network system (wireless network) and the Internet.“Computer registration will begin with the new students in October but that of continuing students may take some time.” Tusubira said. “New students will have their registration done electronically,” he added. The Academic Records Information System currently being worked on will solve inconveniences encountered during the registration exercise, which has been a challenge to the university.Tusubira said USAID, Norwegian Agency for Development (NORAD), SIDA/SAREC and the Government of Uganda through the African Development Bank (ADB) have funded project.“The wireless network was established 14 months ago. The optical fibre backbone has just been completed,” Tusubira said. These will help in academic records, human resource and financial information systems that will put in place an efficient and user friendly direct interconnection of the whole campus.“The academic and library information systems will be a priority to us because they benefit the students to whom we have an obligation,” Tusubira said. The network which will connect the library is not yet complete. But when completed, it will be possible to access library literature online,” Tusubira said.Ends
