There Were Plenty Of Big Blue Companies Who Were Notably Absent For Whatever The Reason Was

Though the celebrity count on the ground was rather on the thin side for the Sanyu FM Celebrity Car wash last Saturday at Crane Chambers, there were, however, enough notable names from Sanyu FM to make up for that short fall.
The essence of the car wash was to raise money for a notable charitable cause — Sanyu Babies Home in Namirembe. And at the day’s end when all the celebrities retired to the drink and food marquee, tired and worn out, they could applaud themselves for they raised more than sh5m plus for the babies. And nobody was happier than Joyce Lulindwa, administrator Sanyu Babies Home, who went out of her way to profusely thank everybody who helped out especially, Njoroge Karanja, Sanyu FM’s General Manager - the brains behind the cause.
Once the trickle of cars into the Crane Chambers car park gathered momentum, with the number of corporate branded cars and banners hanging up, it looked more like a case of spotting the absentee company than a car wash. And there were plenty of big blue chip companies who were notably absent for whatever the reason was. No Nile Breweries, MTN, Mukwano, House of Plastics or Alam.
That aside, the Sanyu FM presenters — Belinda, Banji, Mitch, Crystal, Nash, Big Ben, Marcus, Sheanice, Timothy and a whole load of back room staff, donned eye piercing bright yellow jump suits and set about the task they had been assigned.
News reader Belinda and Presenter Crystal looked a trifle apprehensive — perhaps wondering what the effects of omo would have on their slender and soft fingers. Meanwhile presenters Mitch and Nash displayed more than average car washing skills, enough to make a guest muse out aloud “if they used to wash cars for a living in their previous jobs”.
Before the presenters set about washing the cars, each company had to donate sh100,000 per car to the cause. UBL’s Sandor Walusimbi rolled in a more than clean Guinness pick-up, which got his colleague Winston Agaba wondering why he was here.
Flora Bitature lumbered in in a Toyota kamunye - not a taxi though, but the blue Simba Telecom delivery van.
When the Ziper Model’s pick up truck was spotted at the entrance, everyone craned to necks in anticipation that the beauty, Rehema Nakuya would be on board. She wasn’t. Instead, out poured two models in tighter than tight white jump-suits. And so tight they were, most men apart from doing the obvious ogling began to speculate as to whether they were wearing underwear or not.
WBS turned up in two cars while City Tyres had a mini van that literally scared the wits out of some of the presenters.
The celebrity car washers were split into teams - Afternoon Jam, News, Morning Zoo, Love Zone, News and The Drive Show. And it was not just a leisurely car wash but one against time.
Though not presenters at Sanyu FM, Meera and Rajiv Ruparelia took in the event, as did Ada Magezi of AfricaOne.
All the cars that were washed were your average run of the mill cars until the sleek blue Mercedes which bore the personalised number plate — SR 1 made an appearance. Suddenly the once tired presenters got second wind, abandoned whatever other car they were washing including Tom Mugenga’s Range Rover for the Merc.
Obviously Sudhir Ruparelia’s presence was the star attraction - everybody now wondering whether he, Sudhir would order his senior staff - Tharani Azim and Abbey Kassam into jump suits and start washing cars too. He didn’t, but along with Magezi of AfricaOne, they were assigned the task of washing a taxi kamunye. And the results? I wouldn’t encourage them to give up their day jobs!
The business card raffle at the end of the event — a return ticket to Nairobi, courtesy of AfricaOne, was won by Ashok Abrol, Chief Marketing Officer with Roofing’s Ltd. Ends
