By Dennis OjweeA UPDF military brigade will be deployed at Paibona parish in Awach sub-county in Aswa constituency in Gulu to curb insecurity and pave the way for dismantling the displaced people’s camps in Acholi. The Gulu LC5 chairman, Lt. Col. Walter Ochora, told a candidates’ meeting at Paibona that UPDF troops were already being withdrawn from various parts of the north. The other candidates are Charles Alai, a former minister for Public Service, Lt. Col. Okot-Alenysio and Uma Kerubino. He said they would continue to advance northwards until they reached the Uganda-Sudan border, to provide security so that people can return home from camps that have been their homes for the last 15 years. He said this was part of the military strategy laid by the government to dismantle the camps.Ochora said the Government had exempted all Acholi in the camps from paying graduated tax until the war in the north is over. The three attacked local Members of Parliament, Norbert Mao (Gulu municipality), Michael Nyeko -Ocula (Kilak) and Reagan Okumu (Aswa) for supporting Uma Kerubino.Uma is the Democratic Party chairman in Gulu. The candidates claim the MPs should have supported all candidates since they represent the entire population in Gulu.Uma said the three MPs became his strong campaign cadres of their own free will.He said he (Uma) did not appoint them.Alai who is making his fourth attempt at the district leadership promised to ensure complete restocking of Acholi. Alenysio warned Uma not to despise soldiers. He said he stands to unite the Acholi. The elections are scheduled to take place mid-February.
