PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has promised to replace materials destroyed by rival groups during local council elections at Twin-Age Infant School in Wankulukuku, a Kampala suburb, last month, reports Geoffrey Kamali. He made the pledge on Monday after the school headteacher, Cissy Makanga, said her school was destroyed by rival political groups, who burnt desks, books and other property.Museveni had just visited victims injured in clashes between supporters of two Kampala mayoral candidates, Wasswa Ziritwawula and Sebaana Kizito, the incumbent, in Kansanga. He addressed mini-rallies along the way. Residents told the President that they were attacked by their political opponents but got no quick response from Police at Kabalagala Police post.Museveni condemned violence in politics and assured the victims that the culprits would be arrested and dealt with.He said the low development plaguing the city was due to bad leadership within Kampala City Council, a press statement from State House said yesterday. He singled out Sebaana Kizito, Nsubuga Nsambu (Makindye West), Ken Lukyamuzi (Rubaga South) and Rubaga Division chairman Justin Ssendikadiwa, as some of the bad leaders.Museveni was particularly irritated by the dusty roads, strewn with used polythene bags, which he said showed failure on the part of the city authorities. His convoy drove through deep gullies, followed by thick dust as he moved from Kansanga to Wankulukuku. He said, “If you choose Ssebaana rightfully, he will be your mayor but that will be your choice. I am only guiding you to vote the right leaders. your gun to rid yourself of poverty is to vote properly.” Kampala Woman MP Margaret Nantongo Zziwa and Kayunga RDC Nava Nabagesera were part of his entourage. Museveni’s son, Capt. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, was part of his security unit.Museveni said those who registered twice would be arrested for trying to manipulate the results. He also warned that the Police would be ‘sieved’ to weed out bad elements. He said some LC officials were biased while handling cases due to their political beliefs.Ends
