By Jonathan Angura Officials from the fisheries department and Uganda Revenue Authority on Tuesday burnt fish worth sh4.34m and illegal nets impounded in an operation at Bugoto landing site, Mayuge district and Dolwe islands in Bugiri district. The guard in charge of Bugoto landing site, David Mugooda, said the tilapia was packed in 62 baskets of 100kgs each. Most of it was smoked. He said the fish had been bought by mongers who ferry it to markets in Mbale, Tororo and Pallisa districts and others smuggle it across the border to Kenya. Mugooda said the fishmongers connived with the fishermen to collect the catch before it arrived at landing sites. Use of illegal nets has increased on Uganda’s lakes. Ends
