PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni on Thursday launched the 2002 census that commences in September, reports Darious Magara and Hannington Mbabazi.Museveni, who was represented by finance, planning and economic development minister Gerald Ssendaula, said the sh26b exercise would run from September 13 to 19.He said the data obtained from the census would be used for policy making to improve on the well-being of the population.Ssendaula, who represented Museveni at the World Population Day celebrations at Kabale Stadium, said several districts faced problems of poverty, high population and development.The celebration was attended by gender, labour and social development state ministers Dr. Alex Kamugisha for children and youth affairs and Grace Akello for entandikwa.Museveni said Kabale was chosen to host the celebration because of its unique population problems involving poverty, food shortages, poor soils, ill health and large families.District council chairman Adison Kakuru said the district population stood at an estimated 630,000 people with a family of about seven people living on less than an acre of land.MPs Steven Bamwanga (Ndorwa West), Henry Banyenzaki (Rubanda West), Jack Sabiiti (Rukiga), Avitus Tibarimbasa (Ndorwa East) Serapio Rukundo (Kabale Municipality), Hope Mwesigye (Kabale Woman) and Rukungiri LC5 chairman Gabriel Kangwagye attended the function.Ends
