THE Government has finally agreed to pay sh818m as compensation for the ebola epidemic victims and their dependents, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has announced.

According to the ministry’s policy statement currently being scrutinised by the Parliament committee on social services, the compensation is in line with the Workers Compensation Act of 2000. “The ministry has already processed and established the list of the victims and the dependents of the epidemic, and they are due for compensation this financial year,” the statement said.The parliamentary committee chaired by Dorothy Hyuha (Woman Tororo) today meets minister Bakoko Bakoru for details on the compensation.Hyuha said the MPs wanted to know the progress of the proposed memorial health centre which politicians had requested for in memory of the epidemic victims.Over 160 people in northern Uganda, died of ebola epidemic. They included the medical superintendent of Lacor Hospital, Dr Matthew Lukwiya.Ends
