By Harry Sagara You have most definitely heard the song. Yes, that gig that goes: “Ayaiyaiya... ayaoooooh... it’s a Friday night...everything alright...!†That song only goes to explain that our neighbours, the Kenyans, are headed to attack the Ugandan music market with a force so enormous that Operation Iron fist might appear like a joke. After barely two months on the market, it is already gripping us with enormous verve. It is probably the most repeated song on Sanyu FM and Capital FM. Swagger into the night-clubs and see how this song whips a frenzy. To put it mildly, its one song whose appeal was tailor-made for the Ugandan market. I don’t know about Kenyans, but Mimi na Wewe is headed for the Ugandan skies, like it or not. Done in an alloy of ghetto Kiswahili (Sheng) and English, Mimi na Wewe is basically a feel-happy song that doesn’t possess any sensible lyrics. It is a pacy outfit enhanced by a meaty baseline that would get you jumping to your feet and dancing like crazy. The gig was put together by the revolutionists of Kenyan Music, Ogopa DJs. The Nairobi-based group is surely a force to reckon with on the East African music scene and are currently the most sought-after producers-cum-DJs after our own Steve Jean Serunkuma. They are also the brains behind Chameleone’s Mama Mia hit, Bebe Cool’s Fitina and many other songs. Ogopa DJs are not musicians. They would befit the tag of ‘saviours’ whose main objective is to develop the talent bestowed upon erstwhile unknown but talented young crooners. According to wakilisha.com, a website that promotes Kenyan Music, it was after observing the frustrations Kenya’s upcoming artistes underwent that this group, whose main objective is to uplift the local artists into the limelight, came together to form the Ogopa Deejays. The group, whose members prefer to be known by single names, consists of Francis (director), Lucas (director) and Banda (manager). It was formed in 1996. Ends
