PRIME Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi yesterday became a fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) for his outstanding contribution as a political scientist and politician.
The honour was bestowed upon him by UNAS at a ceremony held at Hotel Africana, kampala.
UNAS brings together physical, biological and social scientists.
While receiving his honour, Nsibambi said people who have made outstanding contributions to society should be honoured while they were still alive.
Prof. Frederick Kayanja, the Vice-Chancellor of Mbarara University and Prof. William Banage of Makerere University zoology department, were also honoured.
“We are familiar with the practice of honouring individuals posthumously. I am not sure that those we honour posthumously really appreciate this gesture after they have died. I am really grateful for the recognition that has been bestowed upon me while I am still alive,” Nsibambi said.
He attributed his success to his late wife Rhoda, whom he said was a facilitator of his careers. He also thanked President Yoweri Museveni for giving him a political opportunity to serve the country as Prime Minister. Ends
