A member of the parliamentary committee on appointments and former presidential aspirant, Aggrey Awori has said the nomination of Hajat Aisha Lubega for appointment on the Electoral Commission is unacceptable.

“If her name is brought back as we’ve heard, we shall reject it again. Any further debate on the matter will only cause more embarrassment to the lady,” Awori told The New Vision yesterday.

The committee chaired by Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi rejected Lubega’s appointment because her husband chairs the Education Service Commission.

The MPs said they had nothing against her but that it was improper to have two people from the same family on statutory commissions.

Awori said appointments of Muslim women in high public offices had been revolving around less than 10 families.

“We can’t allow this to continue as if there are no other learned Muslim women in the country. We can produce a list of highly educated Muslim women from the Uganda Muslim Women Association,” he added.

Jacob Oulanyah (Omoro) also urged legislators to reject Lubega’s name if it is brought before the committee again.

“It will be sad for the appointment committee to reverse its earlier decision. I hope it will not,” Oulanyah said.

The new Electoral Commission chairperson, Eng. Badru Kiggundu and five other newly appointed commissioners were sworn-in on Monday by the Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki.

Hajat Lubega did not attend the ceremony also witnessed by justice and constitutional affairs minister Janat Mukwaya.
