PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said he will abide by the constitution and retire in 2006.
“Tell them that Museveni will follow the constitution of Uganda. I am the one who wrote that constitution I will abide by it,” Museveni said at a conference he addressed together with Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi at State House Nakasero, on Thursday.
The President was responding to a question on whether he would retire in 2006.
Moi lashed out at the rebels fighting the Ugandan government saying they lacked a political agenda. He called on them to give up and push for peace.
“Those who are disturbing the people of Uganda should learn that they should fight to have their people live in peace. If they didn’t fight colonialism why are they fighting their own people?” he asked.
He said, “Africa will shape its own future through the good and democratic leadership of its people and not through wars.”
He described officials who had defected from his government to the opposition as rejects without leadership qualities but “just running around.”
“I sympathise with them for hoping that by joining the other party a miracle will happen. Nothing will change,” Moi said.
He hailed President Museveni for doing good things for Uganda.
During a dinner hosted in Moi’s honour, Museveni hailed him for his contribution to the East African region.
