PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said the Government will soon set a minimum wage.

By Alfred Wasike PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said the Government will soon set a minimum wage. Addressing a huge rally at the Sugar Corporation of Uganda (SCOUL) in Lugazi on Tuesday, Museveni said, "We are discussing with employers. We shall soon set a minimum wage for workers in Uganda." He said a minimum wage was an important part of Uganda's industrial development. Museveni later addressed rallies at Mbiko, Njeru, Buloba, Malindi, Kikubamutwe, Wakisi, Bukeeka, Kangulumira, Nazigo and Kalagi. He urged his audiences to "regard elections very seriously" and vote for him because he represents the "Movement that is the only organisation that has Uganda at heart." He assured the Cable Corporation and the UGMA workers that the Government "will ensure that the two very important industries do not close down." Museveni was reacting to fears by the workers that they were soon losing their jobs "because UEB does not buy cables from Cable Corporation anymore." "I don't know why UEB is not buying materials from here. I will telephone them today or tomorrow so that they can explain to me why they don't buy cables from here. We shall protect Cable Corporation and UGMA. The Government has shares in UGMA. The Mehtas have some shares too. Don't worry about your jobs," he said. Museveni said his government would ensure that sub-counties around Lugazi get electricity soon. He also promised road construction and maintenance equipment. He lashed out at his opponents for telling the electorate that they would abolish taxes. "I urge you not to believe in those liars," he said. Ends
