FORMER Ugandan president, Godfrey Lukongwa Binaisa, will this week return to Uganda from the US after more than 15 years of self-exile, reports Elizabeth Kameo.
Henry Nsereko, the former personal assistant to the late Vice-President, Dr. Samson Kisekka, said Binaisa, who has been living in the US since 1980, will return on Friday.
Speaking to The New Vision on phone from the UK, Nsereko said "Binaisa will arrive aboard Sabena Airlines on Friday at 8:00pm."
He described Binaisa's return as a manifestation of the Movement's good rule and good democratic policies.
According to Nsereko, Binaisa's return was one of Kisekka's final wishes.
"Kisekka worked hard toward ensuring that Binaisa returns home and his work has been fulfilled," Nsereko said, adding that he had been organising for Binaisa's return since Kisekka's death in 1999.
Binaisa told The New Vision on phone from New York that all the arrangements had been handled by Nsereko. "Yes, I am returning home on Friday 13, 2001 at 8:00pm aboard Sabena Airlines," he said.
The Minister in-Charge of the Presidency, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda said, "We have been informed that he (Binaisa) is returning." He said Binaisa will receive the benefits of a past president as stipulated in the law.
