FORMER justice minister and Attorney General Joseph Ekemu is out of prison after completing a two-year jail term for theft, reports Vision Reporter.
Ekemu was released on Tuesday, prison and his family sources said.
Ekemu, a former MP for Kaberamaido, was convicted in January last year for theft of sh113m meant for compensating the people of Teso who lost cattle during the insurgency between 1987 to 1990. He was sentenced with his personal assistant, David Kadidi Kamwada.
Ekemu and Kamwada were convicted on five counts, including forgery of a Greenland Bank form for opening up an account, purportedly signed by Kenneth Omoding, a Kampala advocate who represented the Iteso who lost their cattle.
Ekemu became the first high-ranking official to be prosecuted and convicted for fraud by the office of the Inspector General of Government. While in jail, Ekemu became a born-again Christian.
