KAMPALA, Sunday – The UPDF has overrun a camp of Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army inside Sudan, killing 22 rebels. Ugandan military commander, Brig. Henry Tumukunde, (pictured above), yesterday said four people abducted by the rebels died in the raid. He said the UPDF crossed some 20km into Sudan on Wednesday and attacked a small LRA camp in Lumarati village. A cache of arms was recovered in the attack. Tumukunde said about 60 rebels under Kony's command had been intending to enter Uganda to disrupt a peace initiative which began on June 2. The initiative involves senior LRA commander Onen Kamdul, who is based in Gulu town, and a local peace team led by Gulu's local council chairman, Lt Col Walter Ochora. The peace talks are aimed at trying to persuade the rebels to accept amnesty. "Kony was not interested in the peace talks and was coming into Uganda to try to give those commanders hell," Tumukunde said. "I thought that waiting for him to enter the country would cause more problems. If Sudan can't control Kony, we have to try." He, however, added that the UPDF was still committed to peace. AFP Ends
