By Moses Nampala Property and drugs worth over sh20m were stolen by armed thugs who broke into Iganga district medical stores on Thursday night. The robbery took place after the thugs exchanged fire with night guards and over powered them. Tom Richard Ebuu, the deputy officer in-charge of the district Criminal Investigation Department, said the thugs, who are still at large, stole 140 boxes of drugs, two coloured television sets, two loud speakers and a Honda generator. Other items stolen were a public address system, 200 boxes of injectable drugs (sepplomycine) and 1000 pieces of immunisation syringes. Ebuu, however, said the Police recovered three boxes of drugs which were abandoned by the thugs during the shoot out. Police Constable Asuman Byaruhanga, who had been deployed to guard the stores and the store keeper, James Maganda, have been arrested to assist the Police in investigating the theft. “The thugs could have broken into the stores after cutting the padlocks on the door using an automatic metal-saw. We have got clues on how to arrest them,” Ebuu said.
