Mutebi names princess

Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi has named the two-month old princess Ssangalyambogo at a function held in the Kireka palace on Sunday, reports Josephine Maseruka. Katikkiro Joseph Ssemwogerere on Monday afternoon announced the name as required by culture. Ssemwogerere said the Kabaka gave the princess the name after some traditions were performed at a colourful function attended by traditionalists and members of the royal family. Some of Katrina’s grandmothers have the same name. The Katikkiro said the Kabaka did not say why the princess was given that name, saying, “The Kabaka’s word is final.” Those at the ceremony included Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, Ssemwogerere, and Nnabikande Jesca Bisaso and Nnamasole Nantongo. Others were the Nnalinya of Kibuli Nakabiri, Princess Sarah Kagere, the Nnamasole of Kanyanya Ndibalekera among others. Ssemwogerere said he would soon announce a day on which the public will welcome the baby. Ganda culture does not allow the princess to be seen by the public before she is given a traditional name. The Katikkiro said there were high chances of giving the princess new Christian names at baptism. Princess Sarah Katrina is the youngest of Kabaka Mutebi’s children who include Prince Jjunju Kiweewa in senior three at Kings College Buddo, Princesses Joan Nassolo and Christine Nkinzi. Born on July 14 at Sir Stanley Clayton ward in Queen Charlotte’s Chelsea Hospital in UK, Sarah Katrina returned home on Saturday with her mother. Katrina’s pictures in the media ended months of speculation and anxiety among Baganda and Ugandans.
