By Robert Kanusu THE parliamentary committee on trade, industry and tourism has blamed the Government for the collapse of industries in Jinja by neglecting to formulate a policy to protect and revive the existing factories. The committee made the remarks recently at a fact finding mission on the performance of industries and the potential of tourism in the district during an invitation by Jinja East MP, Nathan Igeme who is also a member of the committee. The committee chairman, Zachary Olum, said the Government’s failure to promote the existing industries and factories was a major hindrance to their performance. “We should not just sing new investors while the already existing factories and industries are let to grow cobwebs and grazing grounds for animals as the case in this town,” Olumu said. He urged the stakeholders in development to revive the production of the established industries and invite new investors otherwise it would serve no purpose to build and abandon them. Kayunga woman MP Victoria Kakooko Sebagereka said Jinja’s industrial potential stands high compared to other areas if the Government developed a positive response to its strategic importance in economic development. The Kooki county MP, Capt. David Matovu, hailed Madhivan group of companies for spearheading the revival of industries in Jinja, saying the expulsion of Asians led to a great blow to the town. Theodore Ssekikubo, from Sembabule district, urged the Government to invest in industry and subsidise on the power rates. Ends
