OWINO market, the largest in Kampala, was renamed St. Balikuddembe market, after one of the Uganda Martyrs.
The Kampala Mayor, John Ssebaana Kizito, was the chief guest at the renaming ceremony held on Saturday at the Owino shrine.
The name, St. Balikuddembe, was proposed by the Uganda Martyrs Guild, a committee charged with the responsibility of making Uganda Martyrs known by Christians all over the world.
The Parish Priest of St. Balikuddembe Mengo Kisenyi Parish and assistant chairperson of the guild, Fr. Deogratius Ssonko, said Joseph Balikuddembe was the patron of the parish.
He said on March 28, Kampala City Council wrote a letter authorising them to prepare for the renaming of the market.
The market took on the name Owino after one of the first traders from Kenya.
