KAMPALA City Council (KCC) yesterday took over the management of Nakasero market after its tenderers failed to remit arrears of over sh36m, in monthly collections, reports Geoffrey Kamali. The decision followed months of bickering between KCC and the executive of Nakasero Market Vendors Association over the debt. Mr. Simon Muhumuza, the KCC spokesman, said the market management has been taken over by their Central Division effective yesterday. He said the tenderers had failed to remit the agreed on amount and had to lose the contract. The officials will manage the market until a new bidder is found. Muhumuza said the association executive had also tried to instigate the market vendors against City Hall. The row has been subject of an investigation by the IGG's office. "We did not want to take over. What we did was to work with them to try to recover the money as fast as possible," he said. Ends.
