Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye campaign team has challenged First Deputy Prime minister and minister for foreign affairs, Eriya Kategaya, over his role in the Danze Enterprises, a Movement company.
The team, in a statement last evening, querried the purchase of Printpak, a government parastatal by Kategaya and other top Movement politicians.
Kategaya on Tuesday said before the sale of Printpak, the assets had been mortgaged, which made it difficult to take possession. He had earlier denied there was corruption in the Movement.
"Hon. Kategaya should act honourably and state categorically that Danze did or did not engage in tax evasion activities," the Elect Besigye Task Force said in a release. They said Kategaya should not hide behind the old line of "evidence to prove allegations".
The team said, "If he (Kategaya) wants proof, let him go to Kikuubo and find out how many hardworking traders closed shops and went bankrupt because of Danze's smuggled goods that flooded the market."
They further said the explanation by Kategaya on Printpak "bear out what Col. Besigye has been saying all along" that many government companies were sold to powerful politicians and their cronies who are now finding reasons not to pay for what they took.
"What is very sad is that Privatisation Unit has been too eager to renegotiate the purchase terms with these powerful people. This renegotiation has now become a pattern where the people of Uganda lose out and the so-called 'buyer' takes a public company for a song," they added.
