HUNDREDS of Muslims yesterday turned up at Old Kampala mosque to attend the official inauguration of the newlyelected Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubajje.
Sheikh Mubajje who was crowned the leader of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), called upon Muslims to work towards unity and development.
Mubajje, 45, who was elected on Monday, promised a review of the UMSC constitution of which he said was tailored to suit the interests of those who made it.
"I support a review of the constitution of UMSC, which I think was tailored to suit the interests of those who formulated it in 1972. The reign of the Mufti who should be in office up to the age of 75, shows the mentality of holding onto the seat," Mubajje said.
He said he was not ready to serve for a long time.
"As long as my priorities are fulfiled, I will resign and go home," Mubajje said.
He told Muslims that he was elected to serve them and not to serve any particular faction.
He said the past history of Islam should be a mirror to reflect on the mistakes and problems that had disunited Muslims.
Mubajje thanked President Museveni and the Movement for uniting Muslims in the country.
