Kawuma sixth in SA chess meet

By Douglas Mazune UGANDA's Stephen Kawuma finished sixth in the Africa junior chess championship that ended at the weekend in Pretoria, South Africa. Kawuma, who gathered five points in the 11-round competition, looked destined for Silver but falttered in the ninth and 10th rounds. Defending champion Amone Simutowe of Zambia retained the title in the event that attracted 12 top junior players in Africa. Meanwhile the remaining two rounds of the national chess league have been pushed to the next year. The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) chairman Daniel Nsibambi told The New Vision yesterday the league has postponed due the Christmas and New-year festivities. "We decided to push it to next year because we play on Sundays and this Sunday will be December 24 (Christmas Eve) while next Sunday is December 31, we will communicate but it is mostly likely to resume on the first Sunday of January," Nsibambi said. Runner-away league leaders URA need just half a point, out of a possible eight in the remaining rounds, to clinch a second successive title. Ends
