THE Retired Supreme Court judge, George Kanyeihamba, has asked the Government to establish an oil commission to oversee the management of oil exploration in the country.
Kanyeihamba was speaking during the commissioning of the sustainability school run by the National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE).
“I do not see why the management of oil should not be made public,†he said.
He said Ugandan laws were among the best on the continent but the executive had problems of enforcing them. “We must learn to respect the rule of law if our democracy and human rights have to grow.â€
Kanyeihamba said it was not enough for one to know their rights, but they must have the capacity to defend and enjoy them.
Launching the school at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, Jessica Eriyo, the environment state minister, pledged to support the school.
Eriyo was represented by Lucy Iyango, the assistant commissioner for wetlands.
“The school focuses on training people to demand for their rights,†Prof. Oweyegha Afunaduula, the head of the school, said.
