DESPITE the unrest around the city due to the incessant riots, city party animals flocked the 2nd Street-based Club Silk to enjoy the street dance dubbed “The Easter Street Jam”.

As usual, the street jam, organisers say, is a concept of open air street partying with a combination of hot DJ mixing (and dancing on the side of the revellers) with artistes’ performances.

It is not a concert and does not draw its strength from artistic performances, but from both. “We do not even put artistes’ names on our posters,” says Elvis Sekyanzi, the organiser.

This time, however, they had a bigger stage and silhouette dancers to jazz up the event. The action kicked off at 6:00pm with music, but the party started in earnest after the 9:00pm fireworks as the crowd, which had trickled in all along, had grown in size.

The emcees and DJs kept the crowd glued on the giant screens where music videos of popular songs played.
The music break came a few minutes before midnight with singer Leila Kayondo sparking off fire. Leila was followed by Sizzaman who also attracted the enthusiastic fans.

There were also performances by Zarie Hassan, Keko, Eddie Kenzo, Coco Finger and Mad Traxx, Kenya’s hip-hop act; who is known by the song Get Down.

For a foreign act, the Kenyan artistes did not make any difference in the crowd. Apart from the Get Down song, which is a bit popular here. Others who performed included Jackie Chandiru and the Goodlyfe Crew.

The event was spiced by singer Jose Chameleone’s birthday party. Chameleone, who was among the performers of the night, had a party the same evening.

He reserved a giant marquee backstage where a cake was cut and served to his close friends and family members. Booze flowed like it was the last day of the world.

Chameleone was the last singer on stage. He sang for 40 minutes and also cut another birthday cake for fans, which the audience fought for.

At 2:40am, the Club DJs resumed their disc spinning. Some revellers took the party indoor into Royale and Club Lounge.
